Why Confidence Isn’t About How You Look

The Mirror Lie – Why Seeing isn’t Believing

Many people think that confidence only happens when you hit a target weight, wear the right clothing or have the right look. But that is not, and should not be, the case! Confidence isn’t a reaction of how you look in the mirror; it is a decision on how you speak to yourself about what you see. Unfortunately, I see it in my line of work, as a boudoir photographer in Perth, where clients see themselves in the mirror and start this negative self-talk, before the camera even comes out. Stopping this at the source can provide a much healthier mental perception of oneself.

Neuroscience research, conducted by Dr. Thomas Whitford and Dr. Mark Scott, has suggested that both internal and external dialogue activates the same areas of the brain. Additional research has suggested that the brain cannot differentiate between internal criticism, and someone externally providing the same criticism. This means that a negative internal dialogue is processed in the same way as someone berating you, releasing the stress hormone, cortisol. You wouldn’t tolerate a stranger speaking to you that way, so why accept it from your inner voice. This article aims to provide helpful tips and insights on how we can cease that negative self-talk and replace it with habits that are more positive and constructive.

Shifting from “how do I look?” to “how do I feel?”

It seems that there is this growing idea that we need to portray a certain look for others. We seem to constantly be worrying about how well look. Experts call this the spectator mindset, which is essentially constantly evaluating ourselves based on how others perceive us. Real self-assurance is grounded in sensations. For example, you may like how a certain material feels against your skin or feel less pressure when you don’t have to suck in your tummy. Shifting from “what do they want to see” to “I feel grounded, comfortable and present” is the positive mindset shift that we are looking for to lead a more confident lifestyle.

A simple way of implementing this, is instead of “posing” for others, focus on “embodying” who you are or want to be. Confidence shouldn’t come from rigid, rigid rules of what is "flattering." Instead, it should come from relaxed, authentic movement. True beauty shines through when you stop adjusting, tucking, or hiding, and simply allow yourself to exist freely in the space you take up. Do this by practising something that allows you to swap performance for experience. A low effort way to do this is to wear an article of clothing that you like for a reason other than the way it looks in the mirror. A more empowering way to embody this could be a boudoir session with Right Click Media which allows you to drop your guard and connect with how your body feels in a cozy, welcoming environment.

Vulnerability is the Real Power Move

We often treat perfectionism or curated appearances as armor to protect ourselves from judgment, believing that if we look "flawless," no one can hurt us. We do this by trying to conceal perceived flaws like stretch marks, soft curves, scars, or lines. This takes immense energy and ultimately keeps us detached from our true selves. Instead of hiding these insecurities try stepping forward with them and saying, "This is me, and I’m not apologising for it."

When you openly accept the parts of your body you used to cover up, you take away their power to make you feel less than. When you allow yourself to be seen fully and authentically, you give other women implicit permission to drop their defenses, too. Local Western Australian women often feel pressure to look "effortlessly beach-ready," making this vulnerability even more liberating. Nobody is truly inspired by perfection, as we know it is unattainable. Instead, we are inspired by the courage for one to show up raw and as themselves. Doing something new can feel intimidating precisely because it requires dropping that armor. But in a supportive environment, that vulnerability transforms into deep liberation. Take the time to anchor yourself in a way that makes you feel vulnerable. You may be surprised just how much you can grow as a person.

Unlearning the "Wait Until" Mindset

How many times have you put off something special until you lost weight? Self-love is not something that this mindset should be applied to. In my line of work, as a boudoir photographer, a recurring reason for clients delaying a photoshoot is because they’re not ready. My clients want to lose 10 kilograms or fit into a certain clothing size or even something else along those lines, before they take the opportunity to embrace an experience to love themselves. The reality is, waiting for a physical milestone to give yourself permission to feel worthy means missing out on living right now. Unfortunately, if you don't love yourself now, achieving a target weight won't magically grant you lasting internal confidence.

Take inventory of yourself. Have you achieved a goal in the past (a weight milestone, etc.) and then immediately moved onto the next goal (eg. You have achieved losing 10kg, but now you want to lose another 5kg.)? You deserve to celebrate who you are today, not a future version of yourself. The truth is, you do not need to earn the right to love yourself for who you are right now! In my line of work, I try to convey to my clients that a boudoir shoot doesn’t have to be a reward for reaching a goal weight; it's a celebration of the person who survived, thrived, and made it to this exact moment. Some of my favourite sessions are with women who booked before they felt 'ready' and walked away amazed at what they saw.

Storytelling Over Perfection: Capturing Your Authentic Self

These days, we are surrounded by airbrushed, heavily filtered, and images edited with Photoshop that creates an impossible standard of "perfection." This has only worsened in recent years with the prolific adoption, and the ease of use, of AI. In my opinion, perfect images are easy to scroll past because they lack soul. It is the raw, expressive, and human images are the ones that actually stop us in our tracks and warrant further study.

Everybody has scars, laugh lines, stretch marks, and soft edges. These aren't flaws to be erased, they are chapter markers of your life. Stepping back from the AI-enhanced landscape we live in now which promotes a mindset of “what needs to be fixed” and choosing to embrace a more freeing mindset of “what story does this tell”, helps reframe how we look at what would be traditionally called flaws. These aren’t flaws at all, they’re your story. When we stop performing for the lens and instead focus on capturing your authentic self, that is when freedom begins. That is why, in my photography, I don’t edit out who you are and force rigid poses. I let the photoshoot capture who you are when you are completely authentic.

The Ripple Effect of Owning Your Worth

When you stop tying your self-worth to your physical appearance, the change isn't just internal, it completely shifts how you navigate the external world. True self-worth gives you a grounded sense of presence. You stop seeking approval from others because you’ve already given it to yourself. Owning your worth makes it easier to say no to things that don't serve you and demand the respect you deserve in relationships, work, and personal spaces. You stop shrinking (physically and metaphorically) and start walking into rooms with a sense of belonging, whether in a board meeting, at a social event, or in your private life. When women stop criticising their bodies in the mirror, they teach their children, younger siblings, and friends to do the same. Your decision to love yourself as you are becomes a silent permission slip for every woman around you to lay down her own self-doubt. Beauty and physical appearance naturally evolve with time, but the relationship you build with yourself is permanent. Start treating your confidence as an inside job, and find communities that think alike, because the world responds when you finally decide you are worthy!
